Kola and Kitza rivers

Kola and Kitza rivers

Having fished on the Kola Peninsular, Northern Russia a good number of times, I can say that, for me it is the ultimate FlyFishing Adventure. Great Rivers and demanding fishing for the biggest salmon in the world, I would say to anyone considering it, go on, life's not a rehearsal. This is one of the last remaining pristine wildernesses for the adventurous Salmon Fisher.

This programme on the Kola & Kitza rivers is relatively new. It's about 40 minutes drive from Murmansk and this programme is helicopter 'free'. The Kola is the river where the Russian Guides were brought up and although known for it's monster salmon (50lb fish and more have been caught in recent years, and 40lbers are not uncommon!!!), it's barely known outside Murmansk.  This is a chance to fish on this 'best kept secret', Rob.

Read this letter from the camp manager:-

Dear Sir!

After my many years on the Kola Peninsular where I have been privilege to fished all the famous rivers up there - 2006 season in Ponoi indicated clearly this exceptional river potential – I will without any doubt claim that in Ponoi you get the most reliable Salmon fishing on the kola peninsular – I will even go further – you will probably get the best Salmon fishing in world today - There are rivers on the Kola where you have a chance to catch bigger fish, and there are possibly places where you can hook bigger numbers of smaller fish - but the unique mix of quantity and quality you will find on the Ponoi is unparalleled!

Catch statistic for Ponoi

2003 - 2287 Salmon in six weeks between 56 rods.

2004 - 1851 Salmon in Seven weeks between 66 rods.

2006 - 2441 Salmon in Seven weeks between 70 rods - 40 to 45 percent of these Salmon was between 11 lbs. up 24 lbs.

Kola river Ever heard about the river Alta in Norway ? – well the Kola river is almost equivalent to Alta This season (2006) our guests caught 1640 salmon between 70 rods – the largest trophy was a 44 pound fish – 22 Salmon averaging 32 pounds and plenty of salmon in the region of twenty pounds.

No where on earth is there a better chance to get into one of those monster salmon than on the Kola River – just listening to Arni Baldursson and what he has to say - “I have now fished the Kola for 3 years and before that I had never caught a salmon over 30 pounds. During my previous 30 years fishing I had landed 25 salmon of between 20 and 30 pounds now having fished the Kola river for only three seasons I have landed over 70 salmon between 20 and 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 30 pounds plus a 44 pounder monster.

Our booking season for Russia 2007 “took off” already several months ago – and as you can see beneath we are full booked in almost all our weeks in Ponoi and Kola River .

Ponoi

Our Acha camp produced 2006 nearly 2500 Salmon to 70 rods and three weeks in a row we averaged 43 Salmon per rod – the last week in June the average  went up to 46 Salmon per rod – our July fishing gave a very high number of fresh fish with a good number of Big fish up to 22 lbs. Roughly 30 percent of the total catch of Salmon was between 14 lbs. to 22 lbs. Henrik Nilsen Denmark became top rod in the middle of July with a total catch of 75 Salmon during his 6 days fishing and several others ended up close to the same number - Oh yes this Ponoi season was really something.

Next year 2007 we will continue with our upgrading of the Acha camp – the two well know Scandinavian Fishing guides Andreas Andersson and Steffan Jensen will join to team of Acha guide (both of them have graduated from famous Swedish fishing Guide academies) – both with a high reputation for their Scandinavian casting skills and sense for excellent guiding.

Four new huts will be added to the six existing huts – that means that we can now guarantee single accommodation for all Acha rods. All huts will be upgraded with new sleeping bags and mattresses – also a new Shower / Sauna house have just been completed in the camp.

Finally we are going to launch two new Ponoi programs in 2007 – Acha autumn program running during the prime weeks of September , plus “the 80 kilometres Acha / Pacha program” in July beginning of August where you have the chance to fish both camps 3 days each camp  – both programs will be on the inexpensive side, and represent very high value for the money.

Kola river

Kola river

Ever heard about river Alta in Norway ? – Kola river is almost equivalent to Alta, and what a success - 2006 produced 1640 Salmon to 70 rods – the largest Salmon was a 44 lbs monster  – 22 Salmon averaging 32 lbs. and plenty of Salmon in the region of Twenty pounds. Very few places on earth offer a better chance to get into one of

those monsters than in Kola River – just listening to Arni Baldursson and what he has to say  - “I have fished Kola now for 2 years and before I had never caught a salmon over 30 pounds. During my previous 30 fishing years I had only landed 25 salmon of between 20 and 30 pounds, after fishing Kola river now for three years only I have landed over 70 salmon between 20 and 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 30 pounds plus a 44 lbs. Monster fish

We have managed to buy out the local fishing licence and control the river much more efficiently, and this season we hardly experienced any poaching.

This non Helicopter program is especially interesting for those who value accommodation highly. The programme revolves around a luxurious timber camp with a communal building for eating and socializing. Single accommodation is in comfortable cabins.

Umba river

Umba has for many years been one of the most respected and best well know rivers on Kola. This year 2006 Lax-α obtained exclusive rights during the prime period from the end of August  til early October.. Many experienced salmon fishermen who have fished on the Kola peninsular and its plethora of fantastic rivers claim that Umba beats everything in terms of beauty, superb accommodation and, of course, the dramatic autumn fishing in the most breathtaking surroundings

To swing a fly through Umba΄s gin clear water on a crisp cold September morning is almost a surreal experience ranking amongst the most exciting moments in Salmon fishing.

Writing these lines we still have two weeks more in front of us in Umba – so far Umba has fished acceptably with some of the great Umba whoppers who have given Umba its reputation – so far we averaged around 70 fish per week, with some Twenty pound plus fish and several fish just under that magic figure.

2006 was a excellent season on the Kola river , the first week of the season started the 27th May , very hard to get rods in to the first week! We ended up 4 rods fishing and we had the best time ever in our fishing lives... we landed 65 salmon and the average weight was well over 20 pounds and several over 40 pounds.

More rods came in to the second week of June , 2 - 9th June , still only big salmon around and the average weight just at 20 pounds , rods where catching from 5 to 22 salmon a week. All beats where doing well , best though was the Reindeer beat , the Junction , Monica and Pump pool , Home pool was also always good.

The whole of June fished very well , as it came later in to June more fish came , but numbers of smaller fish coming in mixed with the Kola monster , small fish on Kola river is 10 to 15 pound!
