If anyone saw a glimpse of Rob on last week's 'TIGHTLINES' show on SKYSPORTS  TV, I'll have to explain: the idea was to show Craig Barr how to catch Zander on the fly at Grafham Water, well, we had 5 degrees of frost the night before to make the Zander lethargic and then gale force winds and freezing temperatures during the day of filming. We couldn't keep the flies near the bottom nor fish them slowly enough for the Zander to take so we didn't catch a thing, and most of the film ended up on the cutting room floor.....that's showbiz....and fishing!!! Maybe Hollywood will have to wait!

Rob Waddington To Open New Stamford Orvis Store

Rob Waddington in for grand opening of new Orvis store in Stamford, Lincs  28th Aug 2008

The Orvis Company, UK's largest specialist country living retailer, is to hold the grand opening if its Orvis Stamford store on Saturday 20th September with the help of local fly fishing expert, Rob Waddington

On hand to give advice to experienced and novice fishing enthusiasts alike, Rob will be demonstrating Orvis’ range of fishing equipment and giving advice on local waters, kit and clothing.

The 1,400 square foot Orvis store, arranged over two floors has been specially designed to sit sympathetically amid picturesque Stamford. Opening its doors this month, Orvis UK will offer customers a choice of fine quality fly-fishing rods and tackle, shooting wear, casual country clothing as well as pet care products and outdoor gifts.

Stamford in Lincolnshire has a strong field sports community and historically the town is the meeting and shopping destination for the local “county set”.The store is also very close to Rutland reservoir, England’s largest reservoir at over 3,000 acres and one of the premier fly-fishing destinations for any enthusiast. The idyllic, ancient county of Rutland, only 90 miles from London and easily accessed from the A1, is England’s best kept secret; with it’s quiet roads, rolling landscape, fine dining and pubs. Named the ‘Cotswolds without the crowds’, Stamford also holds the mighty Rutland Waters, named ‘Multo in Parvo’ translated as ‘much in little’, which is certainly the case when taking part in world class fly fishing on the largest lake, in the smallest county!

Orvis UK Head of Retail, Richard Banbury said, “We are excited to be opening the Stamford store and hope the local and surrounding outdoor-led community will welcome us.  Our product range caters for the avid fly fisher and shooting enthusiast as well as consumers who just like the country lifestyle inspired clothes and outdoor gifts, so there really is something for everyone.”

With a large number of existing customers in and around the area, Orvis UK CEO, Michael Edwards, found Stamford an obvious choice, “We are delighted to be bringing Orvis to Stamford. The town is an ideal destination to reach consumers who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle and appreciate the quality and heritage of the Orvis brand.”
The Orvis Stamford store opens at 9am on Saturday 20th September, offering Autumn/Winter 2008 range of men’s and women’s wear and footwear from the Orvis brand, as well as leading outdoor gear and fashion labels, Barbour, Musto and Le Chameau. Make sure you drop in for a visit at:

Learn to flyfish for trout on Rutland Water

2 nights bed & breakfast in 4 diamond lakeside lodge. 1 full day ‘Learn to Flyfish for Trout on Rutland Water’. Includes all tackle, permits, boat, coaching and lunch on the Lodge terrace. Price is per person sharing a double or twin room.

For any fly fishermen visiting the area, we heartily recommend Rob Waddington at The Lodge, Barnsdale, which is just at the edge of the Barnsdale Hall property. I walked over from our room across the grassy lawn. My husband spent a wonderful (albeit rainy) day on Rutland Water with Rob. Definitely one of his highlights of our trip.

We had a wonderfully relaxing meal at Finch's Arms (thanks to a local recommendation). The site is quite lovely. We went in the late afternoon and sat on the patio overlooking Rutland Water and stayed till the sun was almost down! The food was delicious and the staff helped my husband choose a local ale (after several

samples!).

No April Fools Day

1st April & the season opened at Rutland Water, & it didn't let us down!
As we expected the fish were about 25yards from the bank. I fished down by my Lodge & caught 6 beauties by 11.00am. Most on a dawson's Olive but some on Diawl Bach & Buzzer. All on floating line, 6lb 15' leader.
Then, straight into the hot smoker to make trout pate with horseradish sauce for Lunch!!
Smoked Trout, seafood sauce, sea salt, black pepper, lemon & olive oil..fantastic!
After lunch the wind turned from the South & made things from my bank more difficult, I'll let them put on more weight!!
The fish were bright silver, in great condition and weighing between 2 & 3 pounds each, and powerful fighters.
One other bit of news...sighted the first Osprey of the year, above Dickensons Bay, visible from the house.

On Your Marks!!

Yes, we're all twitching with anticipation here on Rutland Water, Europe's largest man-made lake as the flyfishing season is about to open on April 1st. The water level is now at the maximum, a far cry from the situation last Summer when we had the hottest & driest season since records began.

Now the Winter storms have filled the lake with cool fresh water. The first batches of pristine 1.5-3 pound rainbows and Browns have been released. First of a yearly stocking of over 100,000 fish, but these are just the new fish, what we are waiting for are the famous Rutland over-wintered Rainbow trout. Bars of silver, solid with muscle, these fish fight like tigers!

The new stock fish seem to activate the resident's hunger as they hunt the margins for bloodworm, buzzers or fry.

Look for about 12 feet of water and fish a small leaded buzzer with a couple of daiwl bach nymphs on the droppers. Fish as long a leader as you can manage 20foot is not too long and clear fluorocarbon. This water is clear and the fish are crafty, you don't reach the Rutland Record of 15pounds by being caught!!

Bank or boat, it's a great time of year as the first buds of Spring appear, then the nightingales and ospreys come to visit. Soon we'll be fishing dries on the top, a small cul de canard cast in front of a cruising trout should do the trick.

Watch out for more reports as the season progresses.

2004 a strange year

On an unusually warm and sunny January day, I should be looking forward to the new season. I should be thinking of tying a few flies and getting on the front foot for the 'off'. However, I'm looking back on the 2004 season. The year when more than a few locals took their alliegance to our wonderful neighbour, Eyebrook. The year when the threat of another hot dry Summer would 'stop 'em feeding'.

Well, they caught fish and so did we. We all had a good start, a hard middle, and here, on Rutland, we had a fantastic end.

Everything was late this year, it didn't get chance to warm up and as we had an extra month or two more than Eyebrook to fish, we had those fryfeeding days of unbelievable proportions that not even the good ol' boys, could remember anything like it! In December!! They were buggers to catch but if you've ever seen that new film 'Open Water' when those sharks started a feeding frenzy?  it was like that!

So, nature solves everything eventually, we've even got some huge brown Trout now, growing away, that they put in this year to overcome 'global warming'!

Yes, we all caught fish this year, I even had the best Salmon season on the Nith ever, in the Autumn. But Rutland Fish are different. A fully silvered grown-on Rainbow that's just tried to pull your arms off is a brilliant sight!
Now are any of you people out there going to come with me and try & catch
some!!?

Rob Waddington, Sunday night, 2 bottles of beer!

Newsletter of the Hertfordshire Branch January 2012 Fishing Club Talk by Rob Waddington

Iron Maiden to Iron Curtain Our guest speaker on the 12th December was former rock drummer turned fly fishing guide, Rob Waddington.( I know he didn’t play with Iron Maiden , but I couldn’t let that spoil a good headline). Rob started fishing, around his home town of Ellesmere Port, as a youngster, and he also fished lake Bala at that time. As his fishing developed he wanted to try for Salmon and fished the Dee and the Tay,

eventually crossing the Irish sea to fish the river Erriff, where he caught salmon on the worm. Like most of us Rob discovered that if you live near the fishing it is great but when you are a "day tripper" it is always the wrong day. So he started researching the best places to go to improve his chances of finding good Salmon fishing on the fly and he found out about the Kola

Peninsular in the far north west of Russia. He managed to save enough money and joined a research programme trip, which made it a bit cheaper, and has been going back regularly since.. Things have changed since that first trip, when Rob asked about seat belts on the flight he was told there is no point as the seats are not bolted down! He remembered one occasion when the temperature climbed overnight from minus 18 degrees to plus 84, causing extensive flooding and they had to move to the Varzuga river and they only managed to catch 25 fish in the afternoon. He told us that in his opinion the Karlovka river complex is probably the best he has found, fish to 40lb are taken regularly, but nothing is killed not even the flora in the area, it is all left as pristine wilderness.

Fishing Club Talks from Rob Waddington

A prime week will cost around £10,000, although you can get there for about £5,000, Salmon will rise to a dry fly such as "the bomber" and other patterns used are cascade, green highlander, willie gun and sunray shadow. Rob also fishes the Fraser river in Canada for sturgeon where again catch and release is the order of the day, the fish are scanned, micro-chipped and returned.

Most of Rob’s year is spent at Rutland Water where he lives and has fished nearly every day for the last fifteen years, he runs a guiding service and a tuition programme to get people started in the sport of fly fishing, along with a dedicated team of bailiffs and coaches.

Thanks Rob for a thoroughly entertaining evening, And a Happy New Year from all at Herts Fly Dressers.

Club Talks from Rutland Fly Fishing

Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures organised

and fished with Rudy van Duijnhoven last October for a Dutch Magazine, 'Beet' article. The first edition concentrates on Ravensthorpe Reservoir where RFFA's guide Mark Haycock did the business despite difficult conditions, next month they talk more about Rutland water.

A weekend in the Midlands by Rudy van Duijnhoven Beet magazine Holland

We look for a fishing weekend usually around in the Netherlands and Belgium, but a three-day trip in the Midlands in England is certainly worth thinking about. Thursday night you step on the boat in Rotterdam, Monday morning you are back, with your luggage wonderful memories of beautiful trout fishing waters and strong.

A comfortable trip with the 'Pride of Hull' put us on Friday morning off in Hull for a visit of three days in the Midlands. P & O Ferrires has the most extensive route network and has the largest frequency in passenger departures from various ports to Great Britain. From Hull to reach you by car in about two hours the area around Rutland.
Ravensthorpe
Ravensthorpe is the smallest and oldest tank that have an independent fished. The spacious 40-acre lake is beautifully secluded in a sheltered valley. You can wading along the shore, from a belly boat or private boat. Because the water is not too large, assume particular boats at anchor fishing, the trout appear to respond to this better than a drifting boat. The water is a "catch and release 'reservoir, which you, depending on the license you purchase, but a trout or two can take.

Ravensthorpe has a very impressive fish, with trout to more than ten pounds overweight. Ravensthorpe was quite cloudy when we visited in early October, with a view of just 60 inches, normal is the water crystal clear, said Mark Haycock with whom we have fished this water. Eenmaaleen anchor the right place, delivered the bungtechniek and buzzers fished very slowly on a floating line us five trout. The places we fished were two.

Rutland with its area of 1400 hectares and a shoreline length of 42 kilometer of a major, man-made waters of Europe. During our second day it was still foggy and there was a fresh north easterly wind over the water. A leader with buzzers and Diawl Bach, l or without a Blob on topdropper and fished with a floating, midgetip (brijvende line with clear short, intermediate point) or intermediate fly line. Returned after a short time the first trout bites. The trout in the lake especially if they have more than year round swimming, beautiful silver color, with big, perfect fins and they are strong as!
Next month more information on Rutland and we will also visit an Eyebrook
Reservoir
